Supporting Your Pregnancy Journey with Gentle, Holistic Care

Pregnancy is an exciting, emotional, and at times overwhelming journey. As your body works overtime growing a new life, it’s easy to forget to slow down and take care of yourself. One beautiful way to prioritize your wellness is through prenatal massage; a gentle, safe, and highly beneficial form of bodywork tailored just for expectant mothers.

I recently sat down with Lilie, certified prenatal massage therapist and owner of Lilies Healing Hands, to learn more about how massage can support moms during pregnancy, and what makes this type of care so powerful for the body and mind.

If you’re looking to add a little more comfort and calm into your pregnancy routine, keep reading!

What Is Prenatal Massage?

Prenatal massage is a specialized form of therapeutic bodywork designed for women who are 12+ weeks pregnant. It focuses on easing the unique discomforts of pregnancy, like:

  • Sciatic nerve pain

  • Back and shoulder tension

  • Poor sleep

  • Hip discomfort

“It also gives moms a dedicated time to simply relax,” Lilie explains. It’s not just about pain relief; it’s about being present with your body during this incredible transformation.

Is Prenatal Massage Safe?

Yes! When performed by a certified prenatal massage therapist, this form of bodywork is completely safe. Lilie is trained in knowing how to relieve pregnancy aches and pains, she also knows which pressure points to avoid until later in pregnancy and which ones can promote natural labor (after 37 weeks).

To ensure comfort and safety, she primarily positions moms in a side-lying position with ample pillow support she also uses hydraulic massage table to keep the body relaxed without any extra pressure on the belly.

The Surprising Benefits of Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage can do more than just ease physical aches and pains. It may also:

  • Improve sleep quality

  • Boost mood by stabilizing hormone levels

  • Support less intense labor and assist postpartum recovery

  • Encourage natural oxytocin production for late pregnancy relaxation

  • Reduce stress and anxiety for a more peaceful pregnancy

“When moms are feeling pain or irritability, it affects their whole life: relationships, sleep, even their connection with their baby,” Lilie says. Massage helps calm the nervous system and release that tension.

When Should You Start Prenatal Massage?

Most moms begin massage around 12 weeks into pregnancy and continue through the third trimester. Lilie recommends starting with monthly sessions, increasing to bi-weekly in the second trimester, and shifting to weekly massages in the final weeks as labor nears.

Each session is customized based on how mom is feeling and where her body needs the most care.

Pairing Prenatal Massage with Other Care

Massage is a perfect complement to prenatal chiropractic care. Massage helps loosen tight muscles, which can allow chiropractors to make gentle adjustments that relieve nerve discomfort and ultimately prepare the body for labor.

“Massage first, then chiropractic adjustment,” Lilie suggests. “It’s the perfect combination for full-body comfort.”

More Than Just Bodywork

Lilie isn’t just offering massages, she’s creating a calm, nurturing space for moms to be heard, seen, and supported through all stages of pregnancy and beyond.

“I often become a sounding board for moms,” she shares. “She said past clients have referred to their time with her as a mini vacation; an hour just for them to slow down and reconnect with themselves.”
